Burger Heaven

One of the things I dislike about eating at Umami is that they have the calorie count written on next to everything on the menu, but I tend to just completely ignore it and munch away at their perfectly delicious burgers. They don't take reservations, so I always put down my name and then take a walk around west village and return to the restaurant when they text me that my table is ready.

Thursday night I went to dinner with my friends Emma and Luca. We were craving carbs, so we opted for some solid Italian food at Eataly. 

It's a concept store, where you can simulataneously do grocery shopping and eat at the variety of restaurants they have. They divide the restaurants by type of food, so you can have appetizers at "La Piazza", or the "Rotisserie", fish at "Il Pesce" or meat at "Manzo". There are endless options. The wait can be a bit long, so we put our names down for a table at "Pizza e Pasta" and went to have antipasti while we waited.

Isn't this little guy just too cute? I get it, I definitely want some of that bread too!

We had buffalo mozarella and a selection of prosciutto, ham, salami and cheese with a whole lot of bread and olive oil.

By the time we finished our antipasti our table for pizza and pasta was ready. I took my obligatory pasta head shot and we headed over to our table. We shared pizza with fresh buffallo mozzarella and gnochi in truffle butter.

To end our meal we went to the sweets section and had hot chocolate and salted caramel and raspberry gelato as we walked home.

When I was in Vienna last week my parents took me out for a special lunch at Vienna’s best restaurant, Steirereck, which is also the ninth best restaurant of the world. It's right in the heart of Vienna's "Stadtpark".

Day 2 Into the Countryside 

GRASSE

We rented a white BMW and off we were to Grasse, the heart of the perfume industry. Patrick Süskind's novel "Perfume" was set here.

The Fragonard store is a wonderful place to learn a bit about perfume making, to buy scented candles, purchase a new fragrance for yourself or some gifts for friends. I find giving perfume away an art, so I am always a bit hesitant when I do.

MOUGINS

Our restaurant for lunch Le Mas Candille in Mougins promises not only amazing scenery, but this beautiful food!

The food is elegant, subtle and feminine, as chef Serge Gouloumès himself described it, while we had coffee with him and he signed his beautifully photographed book for us.

Afterwards we strolled around Mougins and visited a tiny museum for photography where I shot that great pose of Picasso.


In Nice

Christian, a friend and a talented jeweler, who is half Lebanese, visits his mother in Nice every other month. He recommended to have dinner at Ya Habibi, a Lebanese restaurant in Nice. I only wish we could have eaten more, because the food was truly amazing! We even had Lebanese red wine with our meal. 

When I came home I had to try to make Baba Ganoush, a Lebanese eggplant dip. 
It's best served with flat bread, Pita or tortilla bread, but it can be eaten with lamb as well. Check back tomorrow for my version of the recipe!

Back in Vienna I enjoyed a few lovely days of the wonderful spring weather. I went on a lunch date with my mom and I can't even explain how lovely the 20 degree weather felt after having survived the horrors of the polar vortex and the ongoing New York City winter.

We ate outside for the first time this year, at Cafe Francais.

A Weekend on the Cote d'Azur

Day 1

Two weeks ago I went on a trip with my husband for our 20th wedding anniversary. My daughter chose our hotel for us, and I couldn't have been more amazed by its beauty.

The gates swing open and our car drives down the windy road to the hotel, which is situated in beautiful gardens overlooking the Mediterranean Sea facing south. I was immediately drawn towards the large windows that open to the terrace, the view of the coastline and the infinity pool while the evening sun colors everything in gold.

The Cap Estel

"Amour de Deutz" champagne was the most beautiful way to start celebrating our anniversary. This champagne is made to impress. Imagine that the capsule can be worn as a necklace and shows the god Amor with a tiny Swarovsky crystal. That night we ate at the restaurant in the hotel named after the one star Michelin chef Patrick Raingard. After the meal we played some billiard - clearly not my best talent.

One of the reasons I love going home to Vienna from New York for breaks is that I get to eat with my family, mainly because I get no judgement for ordering every single thing on the menu and then eating enough for five or more people on my own. Luckily my brother is a swimmer and still growing, so the rest of us just pretend he's the one eating all the food.
